For the next six weeks the Rugby World Cup competition will be happening in New Zealand.
The teams have arrived, with the opening ceremony on Friday 9 September.
Rugby is one of our favourite sports and our national team is called the All Blacks.

Over the next few weeks the haka will be performed many times.

ReplyDeleteThat sounds like it should be a lot of fun to watch! Here in the United States rugby isn't really that popular. Some people play it but not too many. Our most popular sports are American football, baseball, soccer, and hockey.
I think a good role model needs to be friendly, honest, kind, and helpful. I know I'd definitely look up to someone who are all of those things!
I'll be rooting for the All Blacks!

Are they telling some sort of story? We are also wondering about them sticking their tongues out.

The haka might sometimes be a war dance, OR it might be to celebrate a special occasion, OR it might celebrate a special guest OR an achievement.
Some haka are performed by men, some by women, some by mixed groups and some by children. The body is used as the instrument!
The sticking out of tongues is called the 'whetero' and is done by men. Showing the whites of the eyes is called 'pukana'. These are to scare the opponents!
We might learn a haka one day and video it.
