What Did We Bring in Our Mystery Kete?

We were finding our news circle a bit boring, so when Mrs McKenzie saw this tweet
from a teacher in Palmerston North

we started our own Mystery Kete.
Each day, two students take a kete home, choose an item and prepare some clues for the next morning.
We have had some diverse items arriving in the kete, and it's great fun trying to guess what the items might be.

Leave us some clues in a comment - we'll try to guess what your mystery item is!

Learning to Spell with Chunks

We're trying out a new spelling system in B4 this year,
called Chunk Spelling.
Mrs McK read about it in this blog post.
Each Friday we use our consonant charts and our blend & digraph charts to brainstorm words for
the next week's new chunk.
Then we brainstorm big words with the chunk in them too.

Finally, we choose words for our spelling notebooks, to practice at home and at reading time during Daily 5.
Everyone is being challenged at just the right level for them!

What do you do to learn new words?
Can you suggest some more big words with the -at chunk in them?

Watch this video to learn about digraphs:

Our Place, Our River

A river runs through our town.
It is called the Inangahua River.
Our river is a special place, and we are finding out that people use it in many ways.

To get ready for our river topic, we visited the river and used our senses to explore our surroundings.
The first stop though, was the art gallery, to view some river paintings by a local artist.
(We didn't photograph the artworks due to copyright.)

When we walked to the swing bridge, we used the right-hand side of the road, facing the on-coming traffic.
Look how we are walking in single-file, keeping well off the road!

We walked over the bouncy swing bridge.
Unfortunately, there was a wasp nest by that part of the river, so back we went to a safer area.

At the riverside we SAW water creatures, we HEARD the river rushing over the stones, we FELT the cold water and the hard rocks and we SMELLED the country air.
Did we TASTE anything?
Bobby found a minuscule fish.

A water spider

What is your favourite water activity?
Can you suggest some ways people use the river to make their living?

Jumping High

We had a lot of fun at our athletic sports,
competing in Run, Jump and Throw events.
One of the most keenly contested events was the high-jump.

What type of athletics event do you like best - run, jump or throw?

Describing a Moment

We've been working on describing a moment in time.
We're learning that we have to write in the present tense, and describe the moment using our senses.

Are you happy that the crab got away, or sad that the heron missed its meal?
Do you have any feedback for us?
